About Rotary
Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 31,000 Rotary clubs located in 166 countries.

Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later.

About Rotary Club Raffles City

Rotary Club Raffles City (RCRC), in retrospect was a divinely ordained name. Back in 1980 when RCRC was formed there was no Raffles City complex, which has now become a landmark. Weekly meetings were initially held in Raffles Hotel. Now RC Raffles City meets at Singapore Cricket Club every Tuesday, 12.45pm.

RCRC was formed on the Platinum anniversary of Rotary International and the golden anniversary of Singapore`s first Rotary Club, RC Singapore. By then there were already five other Rotary Clubs in town and RCRC was the sixth.

The Paul Harris Room

On 19 April, Rotarians celebrate the birthday of Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harris.

And though we can’t say for certain whether the gifts on display in the Paul Harris Room were birthday presents, they do offer a glimpse into his life.

Harris’s desk is the centerpiece of the room, located on the 16th floor of RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA. A 1935 gift from Australian Rotarians, it’s made from a variety of woods with an inlaid Rotary emblem in the corner.

A polished wood desk set from the Rotary Club of North Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and a small bison statue from the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, are among the many other artifacts on display.

As president emeritus, a title he held until his death on 27 January 1947, Harris had an office at Rotary’s former headquarters in Chicago. There he kept many souvenirs from his travels around the world, along with gifts and awards, and photographs of his fellow Rotarians and Rotary activities. After his death, Harris’s wife, Jean, donated the contents of his office to Rotary, which now displays many of them in the Paul Harris Room.

The room offers Rotarians an intimate glimpse into the life of Rotary’s charismatic founder. Visitors are welcome to view the room and a reproduction of Room 711, the meeting place of the first four Rotarians, at RI World Headquarters.

Progress for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for polio eradication

Rotary International News -- 29 March 2011

As of 10 March, Rotarians have raised about $163.4 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.
